"It's like if the cool guys you went to college with got a TV show for kids..."
Sunday, 11 January, 2009 at 10:53 AM One of the things I most like about my life is that many days a random detail I might tell you about is nothing like my life at all! To explain: I'm at friends' house this weekend and they have two dogs and a cat. I, on the other hand, have neither dogs nor cats, and this disparity provides many opportunities for contrast. As a result of all this animal energy, I find myself exclaiming uncharacteristic declarations such as "If you would just stop licking me, that would be really awesome, okay?!" as, while sitting here working, I am routinely licked on that space of my back between the top of my jeans and the bottom of my shirt, causing me to squeal with shock and mild disgust. Then when I look at the "offending" party, she gazes at me with an expression meant to convey, "You're just so incredibly delicious I could not help myself!" and I cannot be annoyed anymore. Plus she's just doing what she was taught as a way to keep her from using her teeth. I suppose when you think about it, being licked is considerably preferable to being bitten.
A continual state of extreme deja vu surrounds me, as well. I walk down the hall to the door in the den to let someone in, someone else out...all while trying to keep the kitty next door from sneaking in during the changing of the household pets. I must have made this trek 67 times in the past 3 days, easily.
I am listening to Abbey Road, which is an album I do not own, and lots of jazz, which is also missing from my personal collection. And Van Morrison whose song Whenever God Shines His Light (excuse the extreme sappiness of the baby photos in the video I found; didn't have time to hunt down a different version,) has so captivated me that this weekend alone, I have probably listened to it 20 times.
From a completely different direction, I have also been given a glimpse into a different kind of life than my own, when sister calls me to confirm our afternoon plans. We are taking The Batutah to see a movie but he doesn't know. It's so much better to surprise a child with an exciting movie date than to have him wracked with disappointment if anything at all should happen to change our plans at the last minute. We will be seeing Madagascar 2, if things go according to plan. But don't tell him.
When sis called, I hear the little guy demand, "Who's 'at?!" to which his mother replied, "Who do you think this is?" My brilliant nephew of course got it right, answering, "Is it Mimi??? Lemme talk to Mimi!" After which time he broke into a litany of explanations about the wheels on his truck and how they came off and how he has to get the tools Gamma and Papa gave him for Christmas so he can fix them.
Then my sister who, it might be noted, is NOT the A.D.D. one, starts giggling for no reason apparent to me, over something she's seen on TV. It seems there's this show out there in which the stars are these regular guys, in their 20's perhaps, who do funny things for the entertainment of your children. Do you know about this show? I think she said it's called The Imagination Station or some such. Hold on, I'll look it up for you. Because I know you're keen too, to find out, and frankly I'm a little curious myself. Well see, I was wrong. Had to call sis back and discovered, instead, that this show is called Imagination Movers and you should go see for yourself, if you're at all interested. She's totally right, too: it does look like a bunch of guys you might have gone to college with. I can see how these guys would be far more appealing to kids than some of the animated stuff you might have to choose from.
Anyway, yea, so I'm just noticing a continual stream of ways in which my life doesn't much look like my life at all, this morning. It's a good thing I find these out-of-the-ordinary details appealing, isn't it? It's looking more and more as if the getaway to WV is going to happen. No details yet on when, but likely sometime in February.
Of course, some things never change, no matter where you are. I need to fold laundry and do some dishes. Friend's returning home from Florida at some unknown hour today and it'd probably be best that if she find any unexpected messes at all, they be the sort created by 4 legged friends rather than 2 legged ones.
And I'd better get on it, too. Sis will be here in less than 2 hours and I have lots to do before then. That, of course, is also typical. Overbooking, turns out, can happen no matter where you wake up in the morning...
